At night he leads them back to the sheepfold, which is a walled or fenced area or a cave where the sheep are safe from wild animals and thieves. The shepherd leads his sheep to green pastures where they find good grass to eat. He walks in front of them to show them where to go. Point out that the shepherd does not herd the sheep from behind.
